Company Overview

South Middlesex Opportunity Council (SMOC) is a multi-service umbrella organization that works in the community organizing resources for social change & economic independence. We are a non-profit agency founded in 1965 as part of the Federal “War on Poverty”.

For over 40 years, we have evolved to meet a wider range of challenges that people living in our communities face. Our four main areas of programming include: Family and Nutrition; Employment and Education; Behavioral Health Services and Comprehensive Housing Services. SMOC is affiliated with the Open Pantry Community Services in Springfield, providing housing, food and supportive services throughout Western Mass and in Central Mass meeting the needs of homeless individuals through the Greater Worcester Housing Connection. SMOC programs apply best known practices in environments that are client-centered, strength-based and trauma-informed.

Our mission, “To improve the quality of life of low-income and disadvantaged individuals and families by advocating for their needs and rights; providing services; educating the community; building a community of support; participating in coalitions with other advocates and searching for new resources and partnerships.” We are in a unique position to provide integrated community-based services recognizing that the lives of individuals and families are complex and that needs are inter-related. As a community action agency, we also seek to create new opportunities for self-sufficiency through community advocacy.

SMOC is the designated community-based anti-poverty agency in the Metrowest area and is headquartered in Framingham Mass.
